Implementing Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI)
in the practices of clubs and societies is essential to fostering a welcoming and supportive environment for all students. For this section, please email sagbongbor@stu.ca for assistance.
1. Promote Diverse Membership
Actively recruit members from different backgrounds by participating in events like the Clubs and Societies Fair, and collaborate with cultural and minority groups on campus.
Inclusive Language: Use inclusive language in all promotional materials and communications to ensure everyone feels welcome.
Representation: Ensure that the club's leadership reflects the diversity of its membership.
2. Create an Inclusive Environment
Safe Spaces: Designate meetings or events as safe spaces where all members can express themselves freely.
Code of Conduct: Develop and enforce a code of conduct that promotes respect, inclusivity, and zero tolerance for discrimination.
Training: Provide EDI training for all members, focusing on understanding and addressing unconscious bias. Please email: sagbongbor@stu.ca
3. Ensure Accessibility
Physical Accessibility: Choose venues for meetings and events that are accessible to individuals with mobility challenges. If the space is not fully accessible, provide alternative options, such as live streaming or recorded sessions.
Communication Accessibility: Provide materials in accessible formats, such as large print or Braille, and ensure digital content is screen reader-friendly.
Transportation: Consider providing or coordinating accessible transportation options for members who may need it.
4. Cultural Sensitivity
Event Planning: Be mindful of cultural holidays, dietary restrictions, and practices when planning events. Offer a variety of food options and consider holding events that celebrate different cultures.
Consultation: Regularly consult with cultural groups to ensure events and initiatives are culturally sensitive and appropriate
5. Foster Collaboration
Partnerships: Partner with other clubs, societies, and community organizations that focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion to co-host events and initiatives.
Workshops: Host workshops or panel discussions on topics related to EDI, and invite speakers from diverse backgrounds to share their experiences.
6. Evaluate and Improve
Feedback Mechanisms: Regularly solicit feedback from members on the inclusivity of the club’s practices and events. Use anonymous surveys to gather honest responses.
Continuous Improvement: Review and update the club's policies and practices annually to ensure they continue to align with EDI principles. Address any identified gaps or issues promptly.
