Executive Positions
The requirements for any executive position are as follows:
President of the Students’ Union
The President of the Union is the chief executive of the Union and is in charge of its general management. They are the official spokesperson of the union and the ex-officio member of all STUSU Committees. The president also goes to all Board of Governor and Senate meetings. They also work closely with the VP Education on external issues and liaise between the Students’ Union and the administration of the University, in cooperation with other members of the SRC. The President must be a full time employee of the Students’ Union between the first day of May and the first day of September, and take no more than nine (9) credit hours of courses per semester from any post-secondary education institution. The President holds at least 25 office hours per week and is expected to work at the Union over the summer.
Vice President Administration
The VP Admin is in charge of the general administration of the Union. They are in charge of the Finances, Human Resources, the Constitution, and clubs and societies. They give specific direction to the Chief Returning Officer, the Recording Secretary and the SRC Chair. The VP Admin is a voting member of the SRC and of the SEC and must call and chair meetings of the executives of all clubs, societies and organizations at least twice per academic semester. The VP Admin is responsible for the publishing of the STUGenda, and the Clubs & Societies’ Guide, unless otherwise delegated. The VP Admin is also responsible for the organization of the meetings of the SRC, including agendas, regrets and absences. The VP Admin is also the signing officer for the Students’ Union. The VP Admin holds at least 15 office hours a week.
Vice President Education
The VP Education is in charge of internal and external lobbying issues. They represent the Union at CASA and NBSA and the University Senate. The VP Education is a voting member of the SRC and of the SEC, the Chair of the Academic and University Affairs Committee and the external action committee. They must liaise with all relevant post-secondary education institutions, research facilities, and government lobby organizations on issues of concern to the education and academic life of the members. The VP Education must be the primary representative of the STUSU on all governmental lobbying organizations, appoint members of the Union to University committees, with the approval of the SRC, and be responsible for the general counsel of an assistance to the Student Senators; The VP Education holds at least 15 office hours per week.
Vice President Student Life
The VP Student Life is in charge of administering most of the Union services. This includes emergency bursaries, the Used Book Room, the Help Desk, the Bus Pass, the Health Plan and Safewheels. They are also in charge of giving specific direction to the Activities Coordinator, the Yearbook Editor, the Social Issues Advocate, the Help Desk Manager, the Sustainable Lifestyles Coordinator and the Student Advocate. They are a voting member of the SRC and SEC, and serve as the Chair of the Emergency Bursaries Committee. The VP Student Life holds at least 15 office hours a week.
Other Positions Available
The requirements for the remaining positions are as follows:
Valedictorian
The Valedictorian’s job starts right away. Their main duty is to speak at the Spring Convocation. It is expected that any candidate running for the Valedictorian position is in their graduating year.
Grad Class President
The Grad Class President is expected to be a graduating student for the following year. They are a non-voting member of the SRC. They are expected to be the official liaison between the SRC and their graduating class. The Grad Class President also must call and chair meetings of his/her class no less than once per month. They are expected to attend all regular and special meetings of the SRC and maintain no less than 2 office hours per week.
Student Senator (two positions available)
The Student Senator are non-voting members of the SRC. Also responsible for calling public consultations, forums, or meetings with members of the Union on issues of relevance to the Senate. They are also expected to be a member of at least 1 Senate or University Committee.
Board of Governors Student Representative (two positions available)
The BOG Reps are the two student representatives of the STU BOG. They are required to go to all BOG meetings as well as all weekly SRC meetings. They must be a member of ex officio of the Academic and University Affairs Committee and be responsible for calling public consultations, forums, or meetings with Members of the Union on issues of relevance to the Board of Governors. They are voting members at BOG and non-voting members at SRC.
Off-campus Representatives (three positions available)
The off-campus representatives represent the off-campus students. They are in charge of initiating special programs for the OC students. They are expected to be Off-campus Welcome Week leaders in the fall. They also sit and participate in at least three committees of the Union and are required to go to every SRC meeting. They are required to hold two office hours a week.
The Aquinian, Inc. Board of Directors, Member-at-Large
The Board of Directors upholds the business of the Aquinian, ensuring that policy and budgetary decisions are made responsibly and are what is best for the paper. The board also votes in the incoming editor-in-chief. Other tasks include upholding the Aquinian’s policies set by the Editorial Board, manage the property and business of the Aquinian, and make budgetary revisions as necessary. The Member-at-Large can in any year.
The Aquinian, Inc. Board of Directors (second, third, and fourth year representatives)
The Board of Directors upholds the business of the Aquinian, ensuring that policy and budgetary decisions are made responsibly and are what is best for the paper. The board also votes in the incoming editor-in-chief. Other tasks include upholding the Aquinian’s policies set by the Editorial Board, manage the property and business of the Aquinian, and make budgetary revisions as necessary. Students nominated for these positions should be either in their second, third, or fourth year next year.
