St. Thomas University Students' Union

Election 2012

Do you know who your candidates are yet?

I would like to remind everyone to get as informed about their 2012 STUSU Election candidates as much as possible before voting takes place next week.  There are several ways to do this.  The second edition of Tommy Times is on campus.  This is a brief electoral publication that summarizes the candidates and includes a 300 word max. write up and photo submitted by the candidates.  It also has their emails included–the candidates would love to hear your questions, so feel free to contact them via email.  The Tommy Times write-ups and photos can also be found online:  http://stusu.ca/election-2012/meet-your-candidates.

However, the Tommy Times shouldn’t be the only material you should view on this year’s candidates.  There are plenty of ways to get informed.  If you follow the link to http://stusu.ca/election-2012/meet-your-candidates, you will be able to hear Feb.22nd’s audio clips of each candidates’ speeches.  Simply click on the position you want to learn more about, and the link will take you to the candidates for that position.  Under each photo of the candidate is a link that will take you to the audio of the speech given on Feb.22nd.  But, if that’s too much work, you can find the live stream of Feb.21st’s speeches here:  http://www.justin.tv/theaquinian/b/309303005.  Thanks AQ!

There was also a presidential debate that took place Feb.23rd.  This was an excellent opportunity to hear questions from the student body  and to hear how the candidates running for the position of president addressed these issues.  Check out the live stream here:  http://www.justin.tv/theaquinian/b/309545776. Thanks AQ!

I also encourage students to approach the candidates.  The full list of those running can be found at http://stusu.ca/election-2012/2012-stusu-election-candidates.  Or use this list to find individual candidate Facebook pages which has very informative platforms and information regarding each candidate.

Lastly, a few different campus-wide newspapers have been writing extensively about the STUSU Election and its candidates.  Put your typing fingers to the test and do some online research:  a few suggested links would be http://www.theaq.net/ or http://www.newbrunswickbeacon.ca.

SO WHEN CAN YOU VOTE?

Campaigning ends at 11:59 pm on Feb. 27th.  At this time, every candidate will take down their posters in the two buildings where polling stations will be (JDH and GMH) Candidates are no longer allowed to update any form of social media (Tumbler sites, Facebook pages, Twitter).  They will go off the radar for the two days of voting.

On Feb.28th and 29th, students are expected to go vote.  Polling stations will be located in James Dunn Hall and George Martin Hall.  If you live off-campus or in a Windsor Street house, you will vote in James Dunn Hall.  If you live in any of the five residents (Chatham, Rigby, Vanier, Holy Cross and Harrington) you will vote in George Martin Hall.  Voting takes place from 10 am until 6 pm on both days. Don’t forget your student ID.  Ballots will be counted in the evening of the 29th, with results being posted online.

Thanks for everyone’s participation this year.  See you at the polling stations!
